Nitya Kathiravan is a dedicated advocate for brain health and the founder of the Memory Matters Initiative, a platform committed to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and promoting brain health education. Her passion for this cause stems from her independent research on the social factors influencing Alzheimer’s disease, which has been submitted for publication and shared through engaging infographics and presentations at symposiums.
A distinguished student and leader, Nitya has earned numerous accolades, including the New Jersey Red Cross Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award,
9th Place in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the Gold Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA), and the
Somerset County Proclamation Award.
Her commitment to service is evident through her extensive volunteer work. As a Youth Engagement Specialist with the
American Red Cross, she has recruited over 4,000+ youth volunteers and coordinated blood drives across central New Jersey.
She is also the Founder and President of the Senior Smiles Club, where she organizes visits to senior homes to engage and uplift residents.
Additionally, she volunteers at Embracing Hospice Care, providing music and reading therapy to patients with dementia.
Nitya’s academic excellence and passion for science shine through her research contributions.
She represented her school at the Waksman Student Scholars Program (WSSP) at Rutgers University, where she performed DNA sequencing experiments and published four DNA sequences.
She also works as a research assistant at the Carcea Lab at the New Jersey Medical School, analyzing mice behavior in social thermoregulatory conditions.
In addition to her academic and service-oriented pursuits, Nitya is a skilled musician, playing the piano since kindergarten and participating in the Tri-M National Honors Society.
She is also an accomplished athlete, serving as a starter on her school’s Junior Varsity Volleyball Team.
Nitya’s leadership extends beyond science and service.
She is the Co-Founder and Co-President of her school’s UNICEF Club, organizing fundraisers and advocacy campaigns for children’s rights.
She has also contributed to her community as a camp counselor and through part-time work at NXG Parts, listing products on Amazon and eBay.
